A long family tradition characterizes the history of Polvanera, founded in 2002 through the determination of its owner and oenologist Filippo Cassano. He has always been well aware of the potential of his territory and its typical grapes. Thanks to his father’s skills in viticulture and his own traning at “Basile Caramia” School of Agriculture in Locorotondo, Filippo decided to bet on pure vinification, a process that enhances the peculiar characteristics of both vines and terroir. The cellar itself is uncommon: excavated into 8 meters of limestone rock, this charming structure allows the ageing of wines at a constant temperature. Polvanera is placed next to a famous touristic area of Apulia, 30 minutes far from Itria Valley and Matera. Latest equipments for pressing and vinification contribute to the BIO selection offered by Polvanera.

Our wines’ tastes are close to the tradition: grapes produced by the old bush vines are vinified with modern yet absolutely simple oenological practices. Maturation and fermentation take place in stainless steel tanks and in the bottle. Our wines seek no oak barrels at all, to preserve the original tastes and characteristics of Primitivo and also to avoid oxidative evolutions. This combination between tradition and innovation gave life to a wine strictly connected with its territory, that has a high drinkability and typical elegant, fresh and mineral notes.

Also known as Apulia, the region of Puglia is located at the heel of the boot that is southern Italy. Despite the region’s name coming from the word “a-pulvia”(or “lack of rain”), it is a significant producer of grapes for both the table and wine. Terroir is mostly Mediterranean; warm and sunny with an Adriatic breeze on limestone-rich soil near and along the coastline that’s longest among all Italian regions. 

Puglia is the second largest Italian wine region alongside Sicily, with the former mostly known as a source of grapes than a source of wine, although winemakers do reside here albeit in smaller numbers. Aside from the Adriatic Sea to its east, the Ionian Sea is at its southeast, while the Gulf of Taranto and Strait of Otranto are to its south.
