Chateau de Roquefort

by Raimond de Villeneuve

COUNTRY: France
REGION: Provence
APPELLATION: VDP Bouches du Rhone

The Château de Roquefort is ideally situated in The Côtes de Provence Appellation, between the Massif de la Sainte Baume, which rises to an altitude of 1,042 metres, and the coastal Calanques National Park. The landscape here is a formation of high plateaus, where organic vineyards are cultivated biodynamically at an altitude of 390 metres, cut out of the imposing rocky clay - limestone soils.

The vineyards have been certified bio since 2006. It is in this naturally, wild environment that Raimond de Villeneuve has chosen to follow his passion; the life of a vigneron, for over 25 years.

The terroir here is essential thanks to the microclimate created by altitude and the fact that the vineyards are facing North-Northwest, which brings much freshness to his wines.

Wine Region:

provence

The first vineyards in France were established about 2,000 years ago in Provence. Located in the southeastern part of France and hemmed in by the Mediterranean Sea, Rhone river, and Côte d'Azur, much of the area receives a lot of sun – there are relatively mild winters and dry summers, although microclimes and weather variations exist. Provencal winds, which can go as fast as a hundred kilometers per hour, are cold and dry.

The landscape of Provence is typically garrigue – a short scrubland rooted in shore-adjacent limestone – and dense oak thickets. The warm climate and craggy landscapes host many prominent grapes, although mostly hostile to large-scale agriculture. No wines of repute were made in Provence to about the 1970s, up until new methods and technologies that then grew better grape varietals were introduced to mostly create rosés.
