Chateau Lamartine
by Jerome GayraudCOUNTRY: France
REGION: Southwest France
APPELLATION: AOC Cahors
The Château Lamartine stands at the extremely west side of the Cahors Appellation, on the oldest Lot Valley’s terraces. On those terroirs of clay and limestone, the 37 hectares look at the South which guarantees a perfect maturity to the Malbec.
For four generations, the Gayraud family gives the greatest care to the wine-growing as the wine-making. This is the key to get the purest expression from the terroirs. We give a high importance on the regularity of the soil work to provide to the vines the vital minerals they need. The result is a lively balance between the concentration and the complexity. Moreover, taking off the leaves and the green harvest allow the moderate yield.
A modern, functional, thermo-regulated tool adapted to the traditional methods of wine making: Careful sorting of the grapes, manual punch of the cap. The barrels cellar houses more than 100 French oak barrels from 7 different barrel makers. They are stored to raise the wines among the best of the appellation.

Southwest France, which comprises Aquitaine, Limousin, and Midi-Pyrénées, is fourth in terms of the largest wine producers in the country. As is in the name, it spans all of the southwestern portion of the country, with the notable exception of Bordeaux. The wines in the area lean more towards Atlantic than Mediterranean build, much like those of Bordeaux.
The terroir of Southwest France varies as far and wide as the wines made there. The Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean give the area a mostly maritime climate, although the inlands are more continental – therefore hotter and drier. The rivers Tarn, Lot, Garonne, and Dordogne variety to the soil types of the region, as do vineyards such as Bearn that lie on the slopes of the Pyrénées (with its different altitudes, aspects, and soil stone types.
