Domaine Cheze
by Louis ChezeCOUNTRY: France
REGION: Northern Rhone
APPELLATION: VSIG Northern Rhone
The Domaine Chèze is a family estate picked up in 1978 by Louis Chèze. This domain is located on the top of the hill of the Limony County, on the right bank of the Rhône, 60 km south of Lyon, right in the Northern Côtes du Rhône vineyard. Today, the entire domain is 30 ha and includes some highly esteemed appellations such as Condrieu, Saint Joseph and Vin de Pays.
The vineyard is run according to the viticulture raisonnée (sustainable winegrowing), where the main concern is the respect of the grape vine. At the Chèze domain, each vineyard is handled according to the specificities of each parcel. If the slope allows for it, grapevine trellising is used; and if not, grapevine stakes are used on the slopes.

Wine Region:
Northern rhone
Compared to Southern Rhone, the region of Northern Rhone (Côte Rôtie or “roasted slope”) is relatively small – with only a five percent share of all Rhone Valley wines. Northern Rhone is comparatively wetter and cooler compared to Southern Rhone. Northern Rhone’s harsh winters, warm summers, and cold air also means slightly different wine styles and grapes between it and Southern Rhone.
Nothern Rhone, albeit not the exact origin of the first historic mention of French Syrah, creates the penultimate Syrah – the benchmark by which all Syrahs are measured. This grape, which was suggested to have come from the city of Shiraz in erstwhile Persia, legends say have been planted in the region as early as 600 BC. However, extensive viticultural research has found that said grape came from the region itself.
Syrah is the only red varietal allowed to make red wines in the area by the AOC.
